It is a story of the Greenlandic rock band Sumé and how their politically charged songs transformed the islanders’ sense of identity.
Since President Donald Trump’s statements that Greenland (Kalaallit Nunaat) should become part of the territorial United States, this Arctic island has emerged as one of the significant geopolitical hotspots. At the same time, the threat of imperial ambitions has drawn renewed attention to Denmark’s colonial rule over Greenland, the consequences of which are still deeply felt today.
The documentary Sumé: The Sound of a Revolution tells the story of the years 1973–1976, when the politically charged songs of the Greenlandic rock band Sumé transformed the islanders’ sense of identity and, in doing so, changed the course of Greenland’s history. Recorded in the Greenlandic language, the band’s music sparked a revival of local culture and identity and helped pave the way for the establishment of Greenland’s Home Rule.
The screening is part of the public programme of the exhibition no beginning, no end: Decolonial Gestures in Sámi World-building in the Kumu Art Museum.
