For ten years, the Norwegian film-maker Asgeir Helgestad has followed the extraordinary life of Frost, a polar bear mother struggling to raise her cubs in a rapidly changing Arctic. What begins as quiet observation gradually becomes an intimate story of survival and love, conflict and loss, transforming Helgestad from a silent witness into a deeply engaged storyteller.

Driven by a profound connection to nature, Helgestad reveals the devastating impact of climate change on Frost’s home, Svalbard, the fastest-warming place on Earth. Confronting the consequences of human activity, he reflects on his encounters with Frost and asks: can empathy and understanding bridge the gap between humans and other animals before it’s too late?

In 2025, Kumu Documentary screened Asgeir Helgestad’s A Call from the Wild, in which the film-maker explored the fragile balance of Norway’s natural ecosystems.
